ARCHITECTURAL PANEL WITH WINGED MYTHICAL ANIMALS
Red sandstone.
Northern India. Kushan period
2nd/3rd century
Size 106 by 42 cms

Fragment of a coping stone. These were meant to run across the top of the uprigths of the mailing to cap them and keep them together in position. Such doping stones are found in all ancient stupa sites with railings or vedikas since without them the structure can hardly hope to stand.
The frieze depicts a row of winged animals, a very interesting and rare subject - from left to right elephant, lion, a buffalo and a gryph - surmounted by a convex moulding carved with bells and leaf motifs. The animals show the influence from the Iranian plateau of the Achaemenid period.
